Here’s Why You Should Never Sleep With Makeup On

Posted on

You know you should wash your face before bedtime. But knowing and doing are two very different things, aren’t they? Sometimes, all you want to do is face plant onto your mattress and go to sleep. But even though you’re tired, you need to wash the makeup off your face because not doing so will cause some serious damage. Here’s everything that happens when you skip your nightly routine:

You’ll Create More Blackheads

Blackheads are similar to pimples EXCEPT they’re not easy to pop. (Not that you should be popping any bumps, ever.) Why? Because they’re not whiteheads. Blackheads don’t have visible puss and even though the bumps are slightly raised, you can’t exactly push them away. Which is why it’s so important you thoroughly clean your skin before bedtime. The oil from cosmetics stimulates blackhead development. Do you want clear unblemished skin? Then, wash your face before you fall asleep!

You’ll Have Chapped Lips

You might think it’s okay to fall asleep with gloss on your lips, but it’s really not. If you’re leaving gloss on your lips for too long, you’re actually drying them out — not nourishing them, as you might think. After you wash your face, apply a moisturizing lip balm (or just a moisturizer) to your lips to avoid chapping.

No, Makeup Wipes Aren’t Enough

If you think makeup wipes are enough to clean your skin before bed, then you’re seriously mistaken. Makeup wipes are a chemical and even though they can help remove makeup from your skin, they still leave a chemical residue which isn’t good to sleep in. I know you might be too tired to wash your face EVERY night, but makeup wipes aren’t enough to get the job done. Remember that!

You’ll Age Quicker

When you sleep with your makeup on, you leave your skin exposed to free radicals. Free radicals damage the skin’s DNA that, in turn, speeds up the aging process. Who wants to age quicker? No one! Especially on the skin. Wrinkles aren’t fun, so make sure you wash your face so collagen doesn’t break down faster than it needs to.

You Might Develop A Rash

The issue with makeup is that a majority of those products contain irritants like dyes and perfumes. Those things can cause certain types of inflammation and rashes, especially for people with sensitive skin.

You Won’t See The Best Results

There’s a reason dermatologists tell you to use retinoids and other skin products at night — that’s truly the best time. A good amount of beauty products, like retinoids,  break down with light which is why applying them at night is so beneficial for your skin. If you’re constantly forgetting or avoiding a good cleanse at the end of the day, you’re not going to be able to receive all the benefits your skin deserves.

You’ll Bring Dirt To Your Bed

Do you know how dirty your skin is at the end of the day? VERY dirty! Besides makeup, your skin is exposed to a ton of dirt and grime throughout the day. That’s the world for you, it’s rather foul. Not washing your face after being exposed to all those chemicals and pollution means you bring it to your bed and all over your sheets. We’ve all seen a few makeup stains on our comforters and sheets, but that doesn’t mean they should be there! It’s crucial you really, really make sure you’re cleansing your skin so you don’t wake up with black marks on your pillows. Gross!

You’ll Experience More Breakouts

This one should be a no-brainer but just in case you’re not aware, leaving makeup on your face while you sleep will clog your pores which will cause breakouts. Not to mention, forgetting to wash away your leftover makeup residue will dry out your skin and cause breakouts as well. Either way, sleeping with makeup is a lose-lose.

Your Eyes Will Become Irritated

Sleeping in mascara might not cause pimples on your eyes, but it’ll cause irritation. Especially if you’re unconsciously rubbing your eyes a lot. Mascara, as I’m sure you know, can plump up on your lashes and cause breakage. Eyeshadow can also be a no-no as it can clog the oil glands around your eyelids which can cause dryness, redness, irritation, and even infections. Keep your eyes clean!

You’ll Mess With Your Reparatory Process

While you sleep, your body and your skin regenerate itself. If you leave your makeup on at night, you get in the way of that process. Your skin can’t repair itself if it’s blocked by debris, dirt, and bad bacteria. Help your skin out by cleansing it before bed, so when you wake up your complexion is glowing and your one step closer to a cleaner and smoother complexion.

What’s the moral of the story? Don’t be lazy. Wash your face before you get all snuggled up and ready for bed. Your skin will thank you!
